This is primarily a suggestion meant to aid Shield builds, who are forced to drop their lock whenever they attempt to block, making melee combat very clunky when using a shield. Instead of breaking the lock, Aiming Mode should track the current locked target, if available.
I actually like how it is… I use it (Block/ Left Trigger) to target multiple enemies for my AOE missile barrage, and would hate to lose that functionality…

but I’m not against new features… just make sure it would be Optional (like add an option in the options menu).
